Travelling after cancer ~ Potovanje po bolezni raka

For the cancer survivors, lying in the bed all the time is not the right option. The best is getting out into society and getting those endorphins going. Travelling offers me exactly that and in big quantity. When you travel all can be fine and fun. It just needs more observation and planning in order to enjoy the trip.

What helped me a lot to get me travelling and make me stronger was sport. You need to improve your strength, flexibility, and endurance after a condition as cancer or similar. It is exhausting but it feels great. Sports, before you travel, will make you strong and you can easier conquer anything along the way. Lately, started playing in a football team. Being in a team does me good because I always got the necessary encouragement to continue and not give up. Find a team sport and go for it!

Relax and de-stress your trip

Perhaps the most important tip for most people, not just thyroid patients, is to allow your getaway to be truly relaxing. Many fall into the trap of packing their trip full of activities and plans that don’t allow them any time to simply enjoy their time away. Sometimes the best activity to do while on vacation is sleep. People often do not get enough sleep in their daily lives and a vacation allows you the opportunity to reset the sleep schedule and recharge.

Being stressed while on vacation defeats the whole purpose and should be avoided as best as possible. Unfortunately, I don’t follow this advise enough. I always do so much in order not to get bored when travelling alone that I get exhausted. Don’t make my mistake. Travelling can be tiring but don’t forget to enjoy. For example, I love beach holidays even if I can’t spend all day on the beach. Beach is perfect for afternoon naps, pretending you are sunbathing like everyone else but in the end, you just need to sleep.

Go to places that give you energy. For me, that is the seaside. Don’t go to places that will make you feel bad afterwards.

Weather changes

Weather change affects me tremendously. When we have sun one day and the next it rains, I feel like a truck hit me or like an old lady. When winter is turning to spring is really the worst.  That happens the same when changing climate because of travelling. When I escape from winter in Zurich and go to somewhere tropical is usually fine. Warmth gives me energy but going back is hard. I feel down. So what you need to do is plan the week or two after holidays really well. Keep yourself busy all the time, go to the sauna, do sport so the mood gets back in the right place. People with thyroid problems tend to feel temperature extremes more acutely. Travel with layers, so that you can add or take off a jacket or sweater to fit the current environment.

On the flight

As we all know as a general fact long distance flights might cause blood clots. For people who are on hormonal therapy as me, this risk may increase. Wear comfortable clothes, walk around the cabin periodically, and do light exercises in order to have blood circulation in your legs.  I recommend to wear anti‐embolic stockings and taking aspirin. A good reminder is to always put your medication in your hand luggage and carry one extra in the carry-on.
I do want to talk openly about my cancer and the mood after the disease.  You should too because if we communicate about our needs (like sleeping more) and we feel better because they are taken into account, we can achieve anything. Also, don’t stress yourself too much! I will keep writing about this topic. In the meantime, you can also read my previous post.

Za ljudi, ki smo preživeli raka, ležanje v postelji ni prava izbira. Najboljše je, da gremo ven v družbo in omogočamo pretok endorfinov (hormona zadovoljstva). Potovanje mi omogoča ravno to, in v veliki meri. Ko potujem je bilo do sedaj vedno vse v redu in zabavno. Potrebujem le več opazovanja in načrtovanja, da bi lahko uživala v potovanju.

Kar mi je veliko pomagalo, da sem začela več potovati in me je naredilo močnejšo je šport. Izboljšati moč, prilagodljivost in vzdržljivost po stanju, kot je rak ali podobno, je ključ. Šport me izčrpa, vendar se po njem počutim odlično. Športanje pred potovanjem vas bo naredil močnejše in vsekakor boste lahko lažje premagali kakršnekoli zagate. Jaz sem začela trenirati v nogometni ekipi. Biti v ekipi dobro vpliva name, ker sem vedno dobila potrebno spodbudo, da nadaljujem in se ne vdam. Poiščite ekipni šport in go go go!

Sprostite se in potujte brez stresa

Morda najpomembnejši nasvet, ki velja za vse ljudi ne samo za bolnike s ščitnico je, da se morate resnično sprostiti vsake toliko. Mnogi padejo v past, da prenatrpajo potovanje, naredijo dolg seznam dejavnosti in preveč načrtov, ki jim ne omogočajo, da preprosto uživajo v prostem času. Včasih je najboljša dejavnost, da se zares dobro počutite na potovanju, več spanja. Počitnice vam omogočajo, da si napolnite baterije.

Ustvarjati stresne situacije medtem, ko ste na počitnicah nima smisla in stresu se je treba izogniti. Priznati moram, da temu nasvetu še sama ne sledim zadosti. Vedno počnem tisoč stvari, da se ne bi dolgočasila ko potujem sama in se na koncu izčrpam. Ne naredite moje napake. Potovanje je lahko utrujajoče ampak ne pozabiti uživati. Na primer, obožujem počitnice na plaži, čeprav ne morem preživeti ves dan samo na plaži. Plaža je kot nalašč za popoldanski počitek. Lahko se pretvarjam, da se samo sončim, kot vsi ostali, na koncu pa v bistvu spim, ker potrebujem spanje.

Potujte v kraje, ki vam dajo energije. Zame je to morje! Ne hodite nekam, kjer se boste počutili brezveze.

Spremembe vremena

Sprememba vremena me močno prizadane. Ko imamo en dan sonce in naslednji dežuje, se počutim kot da bi me zbil tovornjak ali kot stara mama. Ko prihaja pomlad je res najtežje delovati normalno. Podobno se zgodi, ko spremenim podnebje zaradi potovanja. Ko pobegnem iz zime v Zürichu in se odpravim v tropske kraje, je običajno v redu. Toplota mi daje energijo, a iti nazaj je težko. Počutim se čisto na tleh. Zato da se razpoloženje vrne na pravo mesto je potrebno skrbno načrtovati teden ali dva po počitnicah. Zaposlite se, pojdite v savno, igrajte šport. Ljudje s težavami s ščitnico pogosteje občutijo temperaturne ekstreme . Potujte s sloji, tako da lahko dodate ali vzamete majico glede na trenutno okolje.

Na letalu

Dejstvo je, da leti na dolge razdalje lahko povzročijo krvne strdke. Pri ljudeh, ki so na hormonskem zdravljenju kot jaz, se to tveganje lahko poveča. Nosite udobna oblačila, občasno hodite po letalski kabini in naredite lahke vaje, da zaženete krvni obtok v nogah. Priporočam, da nosite antiembolične nogavice in vzamete aspirin.

Odkrito želim govoriti o raku in mojem razpoloženju po bolezni, ter izkušnjah pri potovanjih. Tudi vi bi morali, ker če komuniciramo o naših potrebah (kot je več spanja) in se počutimo bolje, ker so upoštevane, lahko dosežemo kar si želimo. Prav tako se ne obremenjujte preveč!
